Tāmaki Makaurau is also known as the greater Auckland region. This stretches from the South Kaipara in the north to the southern reaches of the Manukau Harbour and covers more than 5,600 square kilometres.
Tāmaki Makaurau is often translated as “Tāmaki of a thousand lovers”. Makau, which is often translated as lovers, also translates as favourite and spouse, implying a highly sought target of admiration. This is a reference to the fertile volcanic soil of Auckland and the positioning between two resource-rich coasts.
